If you care about making a difference in South Jersey – you’re in the right place.
You don’t need a specific background or professional title to get involved. What matters most is a willingness to show up, contribute your time and energy, and work alongside others who care about our region.
Our mission is to inspire personal connections to South Jersey’s ecological resources, promote environmental education, and serve as a nexus for community engagement. Through this work, we strengthen community ties, advance environmental awareness, and create positive, lasting impact in our region.
Sustainable South Jersey is entirely volunteer-powered. Every event we host and every initiative we launch happens because people choose to step forward and participate.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re looking for people who care about South Jersey and want to put that care into motion – volunteers who bring their own skills, curiosity, and lived experience. People who can show up when they can, communicate openly, and work alongside others with a shared sense of purpose.
Sustainable South Jersey relies on volunteers to support events, outreach, fundraising, and behind-the-scenes work. Opportunities range from one-time help to seasonal projects to ongoing roles – you choose what fits your time and energy.
Join a Committee
Committees help shape the direction and impact of Sustainable South Jersey. They support program development, fundraising, outreach, and volunteer engagement, working in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
Committee members:
- Meet periodically (typically monthly or as needed)
- Contribute to planning and implementation of projects
- Support Board initiatives with hands-on work
- May serve as committee chairs or project leads
Committee service is an ongoing commitment. Members are nominated and approved by the Board in accordance with our governing structure.
Current Committees
Fundraising & Sponsorship Committee
Develops fundraising strategies and builds relationships with donors and sponsors. Supports fundraising events and campaigns and helps ensure SSJ has the resources to sustain and expand its work.
Community Engagement & Events Committee
Plans and hosts events that build community connection and advance sustainability education, including cleanups, meetups, and public programs.
Marketing & Communications Committee
Oversees messaging and outreach, including social media, newsletters, website content, and promotional materials to raise awareness of SSJ’s mission and activities.
Volunteer Coordination Committee
Recruits, organizes, and supports volunteers for SSJ programs and events, helping ensure volunteers feel welcomed, prepared, and appreciated.

Not ready to join a committee? We also welcome volunteers who prefer flexible or occasional involvement.
Volunteer opportunities may include:
- Event set-up and breakdown
- Tabling at community events
- Park and neighborhood cleanups
- Administrative or behind-the-scenes support
- Research or writing projects
- Design, website, or communications support
Volunteer commitments can be one-time, seasonal, or project-based.
