Caren Kaufman 2023 Mini-grant program recipients announced

New grant program launched to honor Caren Kaufman, a grassroots activist who was dedicated to sustainability and health.

CHERRY HILL, NEW JERSEY – The nonprofit Sustainable South Jersey (SSJ)

This summer Sustainable South Jersey announced our new mini-grant program created to honor a former Board member, Caren Kaufman, a grassroots activist who was dedicated to sustainability and health. This new initiative funded 2, $500 grants to students in grades 6 through graduate collegiate programs, grassroots community leaders and/or environmental organizations who are working to create cleaner, greener and healthier communities in the South Jersey area. Projects were to be implemented within 6 months after award announcement.

North Camden Community Gardens is a gardening program organized by North Camden Community Gardens (NCCG), an organization that supports its community in beautifying its neighborhood by introducing all ages to urban greening and agriculture. It would be an educational aspect to any school or learning program. We also welcome those who are looking for community service hours or a fun place to come together as a community.

Multiple goats standing in a forest area.In Oaklyn, Saddler’s Woods Conservation Association received the other $500 Caren Kaufman mini grant.

The grant will be used to support Operation Goat Munch project in Saddler’s Woods, Haddon Township. The munching goats graze in areas of high infestation to help to reduce invasive species and restore native biodiversity without the use of pesticides.

Saddler’s Woods Conservation Association (SWCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to education, restoration, and research of Saddler’s Woods, a 25 acre urban forest located in Haddon Township, New Jersey.
